So over the weekend I finished The Legend of Shadow High by Shannon & Dean Hale. I was rather pleased with it. I finished the 327 page novel in just under two days. I have always had a soft spot for fairytales, especially fairytales with a twist. Therefore, when the Ever After series and Monster High Series [both books and movies] I was instantly drawn toward them.
The Legend of Shadow High was an intriguing and well thought out twist to the world of stories. The previous stories of Mrs. Hale have been about one world or another, however, this tale brings story worlds colliding together. Colliding together in a memorable and unforgettable tale of friendship, parental relationships and overcoming diversity.
Hale flawlessly meshes the worlds of fairytales and monsters in a great thrill of discovering what it takes to survive [in any story world]. I loved how she whisks Draculaura and Frankie Stein into the world of Fairytales and Ever After High and shows us that no matter what you look like you can be friendly and matter in any situation.
The diversity of the characters was a well put together idea. I love that Apple White and Frankie don’t get along at first, because all Apple can see is monster. However, Draculaura and Raven Queen instantly get along and bond over the dark-er side of things. Frankie and Apple are the most logical of the pair and don’t understand how the two worlds can co-exist. The fairytale lands refer to the “monsters” as camp-fire stories. The monsters know about the fairytales through “normie” stories. Of course, Apple and Frankie just can’t get their heads wrapped around it; until a mysterious fog rolls in and separates Ever After High from the rest of the fairytale world. The unlikely four must get through the fog and stop the Evil Queen [whom Raven is sure is behind this].
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book, except that fact that I didn’t have any other Ever After’s or Monster High books to read after it. [but don’t fear… I put all of them on hold at the library].
